Truck Tire Lifespan

The service life of a truck tire is determined by a combination of usage, maintenance, and tire selection. Depending on the application, the same tire can last significantly longer or shorter in terms of mileage. That is why it is important to take this into account when purchasing tires.

How many kilometers do truck tires last?

The average lifespan of a truck tire is between 140,000 and 220,000 kilometers. This is a guideline; the actual mileage depends heavily on the type of transport and the conditions in which the tire is used.

Trucks used for distribution and short trips with frequent stops and starts put more strain on tires than vehicles that primarily travel long distances. Frequent acceleration, braking, and steering cause more wear—and often irregular wear—particularly on the steering and drive axles.

In long-distance transport, where the truck primarily drives at a constant speed on the highway, the load is more even, and a tire can generally cover more kilometers.

Factors Affecting Wear

Various factors directly influence the wear of a truck tire:

  • Tire pressure: Tire pressure that is too low or too high causes excessive heat buildup and accelerates wear.
  • Load: Heavy or unevenly distributed loads increase the stress on the tire carcass and tread.
  • Driving conditions: Frequent stops and starts, turns, and roundabouts create additional mechanical stress.
  • Vehicle condition: Improper alignment or worn parts shorten the tire’s service life.

Rolling Resistance and Service Life

The rolling resistance of a truck tire directly affects wear and overall service life. Tires with low rolling resistance, such as Class A tires, are designed with advanced tread patterns and special rubber compounds in the tread and sidewalls. These reduce friction and deformation while driving, resulting in more even wear.

Age and Aging of Tires

In addition to wear, the age of the tire also plays an important role. Truck tires are made of various rubbers and materials that age over time. Storage conditions such as temperature, humidity, and position influence this process, as does the way the tire is used. It is recommended to have tires inspected regularly. What is the maximum age a tire should be? It is not recommended to use tires that are 10 years old or older on the steering axles of trucks and buses.

A truck tire can go through several stages of use, provided the carcass remains in good condition:

  • New tire: the first life cycle with optimal performance.
  • Regrooving: The tread is recut, giving the tire a second life.
  • Tread renewal: The worn tread is replaced with a new layer of rubber.
  • Recycling: Once the tread is worn out, the tire can be recycled.
Service Life of Truck Tires

Smart tire selection and proper maintenance make all the difference

The service life of a truck tire depends on several factors, such as driving style, maintenance, age, and the tire model chosen. By maintaining proper tire pressure, performing regular inspections, and utilizing regrooving and tread renewal, you improve both safety and the total cost per kilometer.

That’s exactly why it’s important to look beyond just the price when purchasing truck tires. The right tire, tailored to your operating conditions, will last longer and perform better. Mijnheer Truck Banden is happy to work with you and help you make a sustainable, cost-effective choice. View our truck tires.
