Tread Depth
The tread depth of a truck tire is also known as the tread. The tread is the rubber part of the tire that makes direct contact with the road. Tread depth is measured as the distance between the highest point of the rubber and the bottom of the tread grooves.

Why is tread depth important?
The deeper the tread, the better the tire performs. This is because tread depth directly affects your tire’s grip on various surfaces and under a range of weather conditions. When the tread depth becomes too low, the risk of hydroplaning, reduced vehicle control, and accelerated tire wear increases significantly. In such cases, people sometimes opt to have the tire regrooved.
Minimum Tread Depth
The tread depth of truck tires is regulated by law and plays a crucial role in traffic safety. In the Netherlands and the rest of the European Union, the minimum tread depth is 1.6 millimeters, measured in the main grooves of the tread. This has been in effect in the Netherlands since January 1, 2021.
Although 1.6 mm is the legal minimum, in practice it is often recommended to replace truck tires sooner.

Tread Depth of New Truck Tires
A new truck tire has an average tread depth of 15 to 20 millimeters. The exact tread depth varies by tire and depends on the type and application.
For example, tires for steering axles and drive axles often have a different tread depth than tires for semi-trailers or trailers. Truck tires designed for harsh conditions or off-road use typically have a deeper tread for extra traction. See also: winter tires

Tread Depth and Fuel Consumption
The tread depth of truck tires also plays a role in fuel consumption and durability.
When a tire is new and has a deep tread, rolling resistance is generally higher. As the tire wears down and the tread depth decreases, rolling resistance decreases, which can lead to lower fuel consumption. Replacing tires too early can therefore be economically disadvantageous, as the tire’s remaining potential is not fully utilized.
In addition, premature replacement also has environmental consequences. More tire changes mean more waste and higher demand for raw materials and production capacity. By properly maintaining tires and using them safely up to the legal wear limit, you can optimize the operating costs of your fleet while minimizing the environmental impact.
Retreading and Tread Renewal
Regrooving and tread renewal are methods for extending the service life of truck tires.
In tread renewal, the worn tread is completely replaced with a new tread, while the tire’s carcass is retained. This allows the tire to be reused, with performance comparable to that of a new tire.
In regrooving, rubber is removed from the existing rubber base using special tools, restoring the depth of the tread pattern. This allows the tire to be used safely for longer and to achieve additional mileage.
