Load Index
Every truck or trailer tire is marked with the maximum weight it can safely carry. This value is expressed as the load index: a number that indicates the tire’s maximum load capacity at the ideal tire pressure. It is important that tires are never loaded beyond this capacity.

What is the load index of a truck tire?
The load index is a number found on the sidewall of the tire, immediately after the tire size. This number indicates the maximum weight, in kilograms, that a tire can carry. For truck tires, the load index often consists of two values, such as 154/152. This is because the load capacity differs between single-mounted tires (one tire per wheel position) and dual-mounted tires (two tires side by side on the same axle).
The load index is always expressed in kilograms. Each number corresponds to a maximum load capacity per tire. The higher the number, the more weight the tire can carry. For example, a load index of 154 represents a load capacity of 3,750 kg for single mounting. To determine which load index you need, check your vehicle’s maximum axle load and divide it by the number of tires on that axle.

Why is the correct load index important?
Sufficient load capacity is essential for safe and reliable transportation. When a tire has to carry more weight than it is designed for, it generates extra heat and suffers increased wear. This raises the risk of damage and breakdowns on the road.
The load index is not only technically important but also required by law. During a periodic inspection, such as the APK or TÜV, officials check whether the tires on the vehicle have the correct load capacity for the vehicle’s axle load. If the load index is too low, the vehicle will fail the inspection.
Safety, Lifespan, and Performance
The right load index makes all the difference on the road.
A tire’s load-carrying capacity is crucial for safe, reliable, and efficient transportation. Are you unsure which load index is right for your vehicle and its intended use, or do you want to be certain that your tires are properly matched to the actual load?
