Truck Tire Size

You can always find the tire size on the sidewall of the truck tire. This size is indicated by a combination of numbers and letters, for example, 295/60R22.5. This marking is molded into the rubber and clearly visible on the sidewall of the tire.

How do I read a truck tire?

On the sidewall of every truck tire, you’ll find a code that indicates the tire’s specifications. An example of this is: 315/70R22.5 154L152M. You can also often find the tire size in the vehicle’s documentation. The manufacturer specifies which sizes are permitted and what load capacity is required for your axle load.

Below, we explain what each part of the tire size means:

Width (315)

The first number indicates the tire’s width, measured in millimeters. In this case, the tire is 315 mm wide.

Aspect ratio (70)

The second number represents the ratio of the sidewall height to the tire width. The number 70 means that the height is 70% of the width.

Construction type (R)

The letter R indicates that it is a radial tire. This is the most commonly used type, offering advantages such as better stability, less heat buildup, and a longer service life.

Rim diameter (22.5)

The number indicates the rim diameter in inches. In our example, the tire fits a 22.5-inch rim.

Load Index (154 / 152)

The load index determines the maximum weight the tire can carry. 154 applies to single mounting and 152 to dual mounting.

Speed rating (L / M)

The letter indicates the maximum permitted speed at the specified load. L stands for 120 km/h and M for 130 km/h.

What sizes of truck tires are available?

Truck tires are available in many different sizes. After all, a tractor-trailer that spends entire weeks on the road internationally has different requirements than a city trailer that is constantly braking and accelerating. Common sizes for trucks and trailers are:

  • 315/70R22.5 – commonly used as a steering and drive axle tire
  • 315/80R22.5 – suitable for heavier-duty applications and taller vehicles
  • 385/65R22.5 – commonly used on the steering axle and for trailer axles
  • 385/55R22.5 – low-profile tire, often used on mega-trailers
  • 275/70R22.5 – a more compact size for certain trailers or city trucks
  • 295/80R22.5 – commonly used in international transport

In addition, there are specific tires for construction transport, heavy-duty vehicles (LZVs), buses, and off-road use. The type of transport you operate primarily influences the required load and speed indices, as well as the appropriate tire tread pattern. We have all standard sizes in stock.
