In 2023, the European Union adopted the European Union Deforestation Regulation (EUDR), a significant step in the fight against global deforestation caused by European consumption. At Continental, we have been committed to transparency and sustainable supply chains for many years. That is why we fully support the EUDR—a regulation that now makes sustainability efforts mandatory for all market participants.

What does the EUDR entail?

The EUDR requires companies to ensure that certain products placed on the EU market or exported from the EU do not contribute to deforestation or forest degradation. These include, among others:

palm oil
soy
coffee
cocoa
rubber
wood and wood products

With these rules, the EU promotes sustainable supply chains and contributes to reducing greenhouse gas emissions and preserving biodiversity.

Strict requirements for companies

Once the EUDR is fully in effect, companies must comply with clear due diligence obligations. This means that producers, manufacturers, and processors:

be able to trace the origin of their raw materials to deforestation-free sources
must demonstrate that they comply with environmental and human rights standards
be responsible for transparent and verifiable processes

Placing non-compliant products on the market can result in severe penalties: fines of up to 4% of annual EU revenue or even temporary exclusion from the European market.

Why this is important

The EUDR ensures a level playing field and accelerates the transition to more sustainable supply chains. By reducing deforestation worldwide, Europe not only protects vulnerable ecosystems but also takes a significant step toward a climate-neutral future.
